  • OPH surgical team in theatre with new MAKO robot
    Orthopaedic robotic-assisted surgery now at OPH 06 March 2026 In a first for North Metropolitan Health Service (NMHS), robotic-assisted surgical system is now being used in performing joint replacements of the hip, knee and shoulder at our Osborne Park Hospital (OPH). OPH Consultant Surgeon Dr Piet Rogers said the orthopaedic robot provides a way of accurately carrying out an exact plan to execute these replacements in patients who show worn out joints due to arthritis of varying kinds. "Joint replacements are a common but challenging operation that a lot of orthopaedic surgeons provide for their patients," Dr Rogers said. The MAKO machine uses a 3D CT image to capture each patient's unique anatomy, which allows for more correct implant positioning when compared to traditional techniques. It provides the opportunity to assess soft tissue tolerances and adjust the placement of implants to achieve the final position before cuts. "The robotic systems ...

    Improving outcomes for Parkinson’s patients 30 March 2021 World Parkinson’s Day is 11 April and we are highlighting the work of our OPH Parkinson’s Clinic Physiotherapy team which has recently introduced additional exercise classes to promote and facilitate neuroplasticity in patients living with early stage Parkinson’s. These high-level classes incorporate a multimodal approach in the delivery of exercise interventions which have been shown to be effective in the treatment of Parkinson’s. They include Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT BIG), yoga, high cadence cycling and non-contact boxing.     Opening of new OPH Therapy Hub 18 February 2021 The new Therapy Hub in T Block will open to patients and visitors on Monday, 22 February 2021. The purpose-built Therapy Hub at OPH will provide a spacious, contemporary environment for inpatients and outpatients undertaking rehabilitation following a stroke or amputation or living with neurological conditions. Our multidisciplinary teams are looking forward to working with patients in the Therapy Hub’s functional training unit which incorporates a universally accessible kitchen, laundry, bathroom and bedroom, providing the opportunity to enhance the patient’s rehabilitation experience and outcomes.     OPH Speech pathologists collaborate with people with Parkinson’s to help students 05 December 2020 The Osborne Park Hospital Parkinson’s Clinic team thanked their clients who recently attended a week-long specialist clinic to help university students. Available to third and fourth year ECU speech pathology students, the clinic was developed to help students gain experience in the delivery of evidence-based communication and swallowing therapies to patients, both face-to-face and via telehealth. The clinic trialled a simultaneous treatment model with some clients present in the room and others at home and online for their communication program. Rachel Bridle, OPH Senior Speech Pathologist said the clinic was successful in achieving group interaction and peer support and the speech pathology team plans to continue offering group therapy in this way.
