G52 – Neurosurgery

A fast-paced surgical ward with a 27-bed State Neurosurgical (Brain) Service including a nine-bed dedicated high dependency unit that treats acutely unwell neurosurgical patients.

The ward works closely with the Neurological Intervention and Imaging Service of WA which carries out treatment of vascular disease of the brain, head, neck and spine.

Some of the common presenting diagnosis seen in this area include:

  • Cerebral tumour
  • Vascular disease
  • Spontaneous intracerebral haemorrhage
  • Subarachnoid haemorrhage
  • Subdural and extradural haematomas
  • Pituitary tumours
  • Intracranial pressure monitoring
  • Hydrocephalus
  • Vp shunt and EVD management
  • Post thrombectomy care.

 

G53 – Orthopaedic Surgery

G53 is a dynamic fast paced ward comprising of 30 beds for the Orthopaedic specialty including 4 beds for Vascular Surgery. We hold the state service for Sarcoma surgery.

The ward has a high turnover of surgical patients including elective and emergency admissions. On G53 nursing staff have proficient surgical nursing skills and are encouraged to continue to advance their skills and knowledge.

  • Elective Orthopaedic admissions including joint replacements
  • Management of acute spinal fractures
  • Traction for fracture management
  • Complex wounds including the use of VAC therapies
  • Pain management including epidurals, regional and patient controlled analgesia
  • Complex Sarcoma cases
  • Dedicated Ortho-geriatrics team consulting on patients over 65 yrs of age.

 

G61 – General Surgery

Thirty-bed acute colorectal and upper gastrointestinal surgery ward.

 

G62 – Cardiothoracics, Urology, Vascular

Twenty-four-bed multispecialty surgical ward with four cardiac monitored beds allocated as Intensive Care Unit stepdown for post operative cardiac patients. Urological, Vascular and Thoracic surgery occupy the remaining beds. Staff develop both medical and acute surgical skills due to the nature of the patient cohort. With excellent clinical development opportunities as a ward area that offers Advanced Life Support training.

 

G64 – Plastics, ENT, Ophthalmology

Eight-bed surgical ward catering to plastics, Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) and Ophthalmology patients.

Staff can develop acute surgical and wound therapy skills.

 

G66 – Neurosurgery

Eighteen-bed surgical ward consisting of the State Neurosurgical (Spine) Service which includes the Endovascular Neurointervention Unit servicing elective Neurological Intervention and Imaging Service of WA patients.

Staff provide specialised care for a variety of spinal issues and complex conditions such as unruptured aneurysms, epidural abscesses, spinal tumours and spinal cord compression.

Procedures commonly performed include laminectomies, discectomies, corpectomies, coil embolisation and stents alongside managing Gardner-Wells traction.

 

G71 –Surgical Assessment Unit, General Surgery, Endocrine Surgery + Haematology/Medical Oncology

Thirty-bed hybrid acute medical/surgical ward that oversees the emergency admission of general surgery patients, through the use of its 14 bed Surgical Assessment Unit, as well as providing care for elective general surgery and breast surgery patients (nine beds), endocrine surgery patients (one bed) and haematology/medical oncology patients (six beds).

Enable nurses to consolidate their general medical/surgical skill set.

 

OPH - Ward 6 Surgical

Ward 6 is a hybrid ward providing post operative nursing care for multi day and same day surgery patients. Specialties include orthopaedics, general surgery, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, urology, vascular surgery, and gynaecology. In addition, the ward provides slow stream surgical recovery and rehab for a cohort of vascular and orthopaedic patients. The ward provides lots of opportunity for staff to enhance their acute surgical and wound therapy skills.

 

OPH - Theatres

OPH Operating Suite consists of five theatres and two procedural rooms. Providing elective surgery across 9 surgical specialities: ENT, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Plastic Surgery, Urology, Vascular Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and emergency surgery to Obstetric service. OPH state utilises state of the art Da Vinci Robotic Surgical Technology in the specialities of Urology and General Surgery. Scrub/scout theatre nurses with anaesthetic and PACU experience will be recruited to our rotational team which includes day, afternoon and night shifts for permanent and fixed term positions. Minimum 60 hours per fortnight. Theatre nurses without Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) and anaesthetic experience will be provided upskilling as this a mandatory requirement of this role. Applicants with these skills will be accepted as preferred applicants. We are not able to sponsor Australia visas for overseas applicants.

 

Post Anaesthetic Care Unit

Thirty-two bays providing a 24/7 service for post anaesthetic care of elective, urgent and emergent surgical and procedural patients, spanning three different units.

Provides clinical and educational opportunities for nurses in a high dependency setting within a complex specialty.

 

Short Stay Unit and Pre-Admission Clinic

Provides care for all surgical and procedural patients throughout their hospital admission.

All surgical and medical specialties are seen pre procedure, admitted on the day of surgery/procedure and cared for post operatively if a day case or for a 24 to 48 hour stay (D023).

Excellent assessment skills are beneficial.

 

Theatres

Consists of 15 operating theatres for the admission of both elective and emergency surgery and provides emergency surgery 24/7. Delivers surgical services for a variety of specialties including:

  • General surgery (colorectal, breast, bariatric, endocrine, upper GI)
  • WA liver and kidney transplants
  • Orthopaedics
  • Ophthalmology
  • Urology
  • Vascular
  • Plastic and reconstructive surgery
  • Neurosurgery
  • Cardiothoracics
  • ENT (ear, nose, and throat)
  • Sarcoma surgery
