OPH receives first peritoneal dialysis patient
Cross-site collaboration has led to the admission of the first peritoneal dialysis patient to the OPH Young Adult Rehabilitation (YAR) Service.
Gregory Nicholls was receiving dialysis at SCGH and was able to be transferred to OPH from vascular specialty after a complex acute 20 day stay.
“Not only was the care I received at both SCGH and OPH excellent, I’m thrilled to be closer to home,” said Gregory.
Previously patients receiving peritoneal dialysis could only be treated at SCGH however the OPH YAR team and Renal teams across our group have worked collaboratively to increase knowledge and skills to enable patients to receive continuous assisted peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) in rehabilitation which means that patients can now be transferred to OPH YAR if they meet rehabilitation criteria.
Staff across both sites have worked hard to establish knowledge and skills in CAPD management and this has been a fantastic opportunity for cross-site collaboration.
This collaboration has not only resulted in the acquisition of increased knowledge and skills for rehabilitation nursing staff but also increased access to rehabilitation services for peritoneal dialysis patients under 65 years.
