EnhanCer – Speech Therapy
Enhancing the Hospital Environment for aphasia Care and Recovery (EnhanCeR) started as a research project in 2023 and is now an ongoing function within the Stroke Ward at Osborne Park Hospital.
Aphasia is a communication impairment that occurs in around 30 per cent of stroke survivors. It impacts a person’s ability to communicate, but not their intelligence.
EnhanCeR aims to promote communication opportunities and support for patients with aphasia post stroke. Volunteers play an important part in an Aphasia patients’ recover by regularly visiting patients for a simple chat
olunteers are required to attend a hospital orientation along with specialist training to learn how to communicate prior to starting.
This role suits people who:
- have previous clinical experience or currently studying in this field,
- are patient and willing to try different ways to communicate with people,
- are available to attend a free training session within working hours (approximately one hour duration), and
- are planning to volunteer for six months.
Shifts are available 10am to 2pm Monday and Wednesday, and some weekends (weekends are only available after you have attended at least three weekday shifts to ensure an understanding of the program)
