Parkinson’s Service
The Parkinson’s Service at Osborne Park Hospital (OPH) offers the North Metropolitan area a comprehensive approach to diagnosing and managing Parkinson’s in older adults.
The multidisciplinary team is led by physicians who specialise in Parkinson’s and associated conditions. The team is led by a Clinical Head of Service and comprises doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, social worker, clinical psychologist and therapy assistants. The service provides medical and nursing clinics, allied health therapies (group and individual), home visiting and phone support.
Medical
The medical team at Osborne Park Hospital is led by a group of physicians who specialise in Parkinson’s and associated conditions. Patients have the option to:
- remain under the medical management of their Neurologist/Specialist and receive treatment and support from the multidisciplinary team at the North Metropolitan Parkinson’s Service at OPH; or
- transfer medical care to OPH after discussing their wishes with their treating doctor to be comprehensively managed by the North Metropolitan Parkinson’s Service at OPH.
The Clinical Head of Service reviews all new referrals and deems it accepted or declined.
Inclusion criteria
- Living within the North Metropolitan catchment area
- Any age will be considered
- Established or suspected Parkinson’s disease
Exclusion Criteria
- Extraordinary cases may be discussed with the Clinical Head of Service
The patient’s GP will continue to be part of their medical management. A medical referral is required to access services from the Parkinson’s Service at OPH.

Nursing
The nurse is the link between the patient and their treating team at OPH. The nurse provides assessments, education and support. This is provided through nurse clinics, home visits and phone support.

Allied Health
Speech Pathology
The Speech Pathologist can help patients with communication and swallowing difficulties. Therapy programs with exercises and strategies can be offered for patients having trouble being heard in conversation. Intensive voice treatment is also available (eligibility criteria apply).

Physiotherapy
The Physiotherapist can identify movement difficulties and assist patients to improve functional mobility. This is done through movement strategy training, prescription of exercise programs, provision of aids and education. Exercise programs can be prescribed to improve strength, balance, posture, cardiovascular fitness and assist with falls prevention and management. The Physiotherapist can also refer patients to community exercise groups.

Occupational Therapy
The Occupational Therapist can assist patients to improve or maintain independence in meaningful daily activities such as personal care tasks (e.g. showering and dressing), domestic tasks, handwriting, leisure, driving and other day-to-day activities. This is done through use of strategies, provision of aids/equipment and modifying the environment. The Occupational Therapist can also assist with the management of non-motor symptoms such as fatigue, anxiety and sleep management.

Therapy Assistant
The Therapy Assistant can assist Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists by implementing individual therapy programs. This can be provided through home visits, exercise programs designed for the individual, exercise groups and Physio-Chi.

Social Work
The Social Worker advises on options available including in-home services, respite care and residential care. In-home services can include assistance with domestic tasks, personal care, shopping, meals and transport. When required, the Social Worker can refer for an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) assessment to determine eligibility for subsidised aged care services, and also assist in determining the type of care that will best meet patients’ needs.

Clinical Psychologist
The Clinical Psychologist can help patients and carers to cope with the personal adjustment and impact that may be experienced after a Parkinson’s diagnosis. Counselling support is available to process the changes that are experienced in everyday life including things like anxiety and depression, and the challenges and changes that may occur to relationships as a result of the progression of the disease. Patients and carers can both benefit from education and counselling support, and are encouraged to use the Psychologist’s services.
