Rotary Club of Karrinyup Osborne Park Hospital Nurse\Midwife of the Year Award winner announced
Lisa Summers OPH Clinical Nurse Specialist – Infection Control has been announced as the winner of the 2020 Rotary Club of Karrinyup Osborne Park Hospital (OPH) Nurse\Midwife of the Year Award. This award showcases the exceptional work of OPH nurses and midwives and in 2020, this achievement is even sweeter as it is also the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife and the 30th anniversary of the award.
Lisa is a Registered Nurse and Midwife who has worked at OPH since 2004, and for ten years in the role of CNS-IC. As the only member of the Infection Control Service at OPH, Lisa has developed an excellent working relationship with her colleagues and the wider SCGOPHCG community, engaging and collaborating with staff to successfully implement the infection prevention and control program for the safety of patients and staff.
She has innovatively facilitated a hand hygiene compliance and auditing program at OPH which has seen auditors recruited from a range of hospital services. This program has been embedded within the day to day running of the hospital, resulting in OPH achieving consistently high hand hygiene rates above the national benchmark since 2012.
Lisa has also worked with staff to implement a hospital-wide multidisciplinary program to achieve Aseptic Technique competency to meet the National Safety and Quality Service Standards.
She has also taken time in her very busy work schedule to coach and mentor nurses to gain the necessary knowledge and skills to provide relief and a succession plan for her position.
Her compassionate engagement and communication with patients when faced with an unexpected diagnosis has been highlighted in her nomination.
Lisa said she felt so honoured to have been recognised by OPH and the Rotary Club of Karrinyup for the award during this special year for Rotary as they celebrate 30 years of the award.
“I feel like I am amongst a very high league of colleagues and am very lucky to have found an opportunity to work at OPH. The opportunities and support that OPH staff have provided me with, are what have allowed me to develop into who I am today,” said Lisa.
“This year, more than any other has seen the profile of infection control come to the forefront but I am aware that I don’t function alone, that I work with the support of so many amazing people and not only from OPH but colleagues across the North Metropolitan Health Service.”
Lisa has been a powerhouse during COVID-19 and the hospital’s key connection to information and best practice relating to the pandemic.
There were three worthy finalists for the award:
- Leanne Douglas, Enrolled Nurse Ward 5
- Kristy Neeling, Clinical Nurse Endoscopy
- Leanne Williams, Clinical Midwife.
Congratulations Lisa and to our finalists. We are so honoured to have such dedicated, knowledgeable staff who consistently strive to achieve the best outcomes for our patients. Thank you for making a difference and ensuring our patients receive the safest care.
Lisa will be presented with her award by the Rotary Club of Karrinyup on Wednesday evening.
