Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital is a primary employer of medical interns, who undertake a diverse set of rotations at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH), Osborne Park Hospital (OPH), Joondalup Health Campus and the West Australian Country Health Service.

We offer this variety in rotations to give interns great experience, exposure and training across rural, private and tertiary-quaternary sites. Interns undertake mandatory rotations of 10 weeks in both a core medicine and surgery department, and a minimum of eight weeks in emergency medicine.

Specialty rotations available to interns through SCGH include, but are not limited to:

King Edward Memorial Hospital provides exceptional post-graduate year two training in obstetrics and gynaecology. It covers the breadth of experience in clinical care, including complex sub-specialty medical and tertiary / quarternary sub-specialty surgical and emergency care. Rotations can cover Osborne Park Hospital, Joondalup Health Campus, Fiona Stanley Hospital and regional sites, as well as opportunities in service improvement and neonatology.

Mental Health, Public Health and Dental Services

High quality statewide services

• Comprises three distinct services - statewide and north metropolitan mental health; metropolitan-wide public health; and statewide dental health services.
• NMHS is home to Western Australia’s largest mental health service caring for youths, adults and older adults. Services are delivered through inpatient units, community mental health clinics, day therapy and outreach programs to a catchment area of almost one million people.
• Statewide and tertiary mental health services include research, forensics, neurosciences, art therapy, eating disorders and other specialised services.

Mental health sites and services

• Graylands Hospital (121 beds) provides acute, extended care and rehabilitation services.
• SCGH Mental Health Service (38 beds) services an authorised unit and an observation area adjacent to the Emergency Department.
• Selby Lodge and Osborne Lodge (58 beds) provide older adult mental health services.
• State Forensic Mental Health Service – Frankland Centre (30 beds) is a medium secure inpatient facility for mentally ill offenders on the Graylands Hospital Campus.
• Hospital in the Home (48 virtual beds) provides acute care to youth, adult and older adults in their own home as an alternative to admitted hospital care.
• Community Mental Health clinics.
